fluid leaking from a car

A puddle under your vehicle is never a good sign. It's important to understand what type of leak it is to know how dangerous it could be. Our Volvo service experts at Fields Volvo Cars Northfield are sharing how to identify a fluid leak.

Look at the Color

Color is one of the main identifying factors of a fluid leak. However, their colors can range, depending on how old or dirty the fluid is and, in some cases, what brand they are. Typically, fluid leaks can be:

  • Engine oil — ranging from light brown to black
  • Transmission fluid — red or brown (or a combination of the two)
  • Power steering fluid — often clear or red, but can turn brown
  • Brake fluid — ranging from a transparent yellow to brown
  • Coolant — a bright color such as green, orange, pink, or blue

Location of the Leak

It’s also important to look at where the puddle is, in relation to your vehicle. For example, transmission fluid and power steering fluid can be hard to distinguish, but power steering fluid is typically near the front left side of your vehicle. Oil leaks generally puddle right under your engine. A slippery leak on or near your tires is likely a brake fluid leak, which should be addressed immediately.

Odious Aromas

If you’re familiar with your vehicle's fluids, you can also identify leaks by their smell. Transmission fluid typically has a strong smell, which helps to distinguish it from oil. Many fluids have a distinctly sweet smell, such as coolant.
