Hot weather can be just as hard on your battery as cold, so if you end up with a dead battery, follow these easy steps. Once you’re running again, come into Fields Volvo Cars Northfield for Volvo service to keep your car running its best. Here’s how to jump-start your car battery.
Getting Ready
First, you’ll need another driver whose car’s battery is working. Park the two hoods facing each other, bumper to bumper, or pull them up parallel to each other with the hoods lined up. Turn both cars off and set the emergency brake, then pop open the hood. Find the positive and negative terminals on your battery and get your jumper cables ready.
Connecting the Cars
Connect the red clamp on your jumper cable to the positive terminal on the dead battery, then do the same with the positive terminal on the live battery. Attach the black cable to the negative terminal on the live battery, but don’t finish the connections to the final negative terminal. Instead, connect it to an unpainted metal part of the dead car, or the grounding bolt if your car has one.
Start Your Engines
You’re all ready to jump-start your car. Start the car with the live battery and let it run for a minute, then start up your vehicle. If it doesn’t start immediately, give it a few more minutes to charge and try again. Once your car is running, disconnect the cables in reverse order and close the hoods. Make sure to drive your car for at least 15 minutes to completely recharge the battery before shutting off the vehicle.
