It’s getting harder and harder to find a station wagon these days, unless you look to the Volvo brand. Wagons have always been a mainstay, and the upcoming 2019 Volvo V60 is a reminder of why they’ve hung on at Volvo dealerships like Fields Volvo Northfield.

In a recent review, Road and Track asserted that the Volvo V60 “makes an impression,” thanks to the fact that it’s “both good-looking and fun to drive.” None of these are things one would normally associate with station wagons, but there are a number of ways in which this particular wagon gets it right.

The 2019 Volvo V60 migrates to the brand’s Scalable Product Architecture platform, shared with the Volvo V90 wagon and Volvo XC90 SUV. There are two different engines on offer; the T5 trim receives a 250-horsepower turbocharged inline-four engine, while the T6 gets a unique 316-horsepower mill that combines a supercharger and turbocharger to limit turbo lag. Performance gets a further assist in the T6 variant from Borg-Warner AWD.

The biggest surprise isn’t the looks, or the great drive. It’s the fact that there’s a Volvo wagon — two of them, even — at all. They’ve somewhat fallen out of fashion as more drivers leave wagons and sedans behind for SUVs. However, seeing — and driving — is believing.

The new Volvo V60 arrives at Fields Volvo Northfield in early 2019. We suggest opting for the subscription-based Care by Volvo service, which encompasses maintenance, insurance, and routine wear.
