Earlier this month, the team here at your Volvo dealership serving Chicago, IL, Field Volvo Northfield, was thrilled to learn that the Volvo Car brand earned more Top Safety Pick+ awards than any other European automaker. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) named the 2017 Volvo S60, 2017 Volvo V60, and 2017 Volvo XC60 all Top Safety Pick+ award winners, while the 2017 Volvo S90 luxury sedan and 2017 Volvo XC90 luxury SUV earned the Top Safety Pick designation. In order to be named a Top Safety Pick+ designee, a vehicle must earn the top score of Good in each of the IIHS’s five crashworthiness tests. Vehicles are tested in moderate-overlap frontal-offset, small-overlap frontal-offset, small overlap, rear crash performance, and roof strength tests. A vehicle must also earn an Advanced or Superior rating for front crash prevention and an Acceptable or Good headlight rating. A Top Safety Pick must earn the top score of Good as well as either an Advanced or Superior for front crash prevention.

Each of the Volvo brand’s new models have been recognized by the IIHS for safety. An August 2016 IIHS report showed that the Volvo City Safety system, which includes vehicle detection, reduced rear end crashes by 43 percent and those collisions with injuries by 45 percent In 2017, the Volvo S90 and XC90 will both include the large animal detection with automatic emergency braking, which are aimed at further preventing and mitigating accidents.
