Here in the greater Chicagoland area, winter has been upon us in full force for quite some time. As your trusted local Volvo dealer, we wanted to take a moment today to offer some friendly reminders about how to stay safe on the roads this winter. We hope you can take a few moments to review these tips before heading out so that we can all have a safe and accident-free winter.

  • When you're out on the road in icy conditions, avoid using cruise control and make sure your tires are properly inflated. It's also a good idea to avoid using your parking brake during cold, rain, or snow.
  • Another important driving tip for icy conditions is to drive slowly, accelerate and decelerate slowly, and maintain enough distance between you and the car in front of you.
  • It is also a good idea to keep your gas tank more than halfway full.
  • You may be tempted to warm up your car before heading out, but we do want to warn you not to warm up your vehicle in an enclosed area such as a garage.
  • If you should start to slide or lose control, always look and steer in the direction you want to go. Sometimes you may have the urge to turn the wheel in a different direction, but just always remember to look and steer where you want to go.
  • When conditions call for it, the best thing for you to do is to stay off the roads.
